What Does Being A Passionist Nun Mean To Me?
Sr. Catherine Marie, C.P.

I think of what it means to me to be a Passionist Nun in terms of the five vows I took on my Profession Day!

What it means to me to be a Passionist Nun in light of my first vow to promote devotion to a and a grateful remembrance of the Passion and Death of Jesus is that I can, in wonderful ways, promote devotion and a grateful remembrance, by talking about Our Divine Lord's Passion and Death, when it is opportune at my times of telephone and front door answering duties, in writing the letters that I need to write, and in talking with the nuns with whom I live! Unlike the Passionist priest, whose life is the preaching of Christ's Passion and Death, my life in silence of the cloister can be my sermon, my homily in fulfilling my first vow!

What it means to me to be a Passionist Nun in light of my vow of chastity is that, for the love of Jesus, I will admit no other lover but Him! I try to give Him my whole and undivided attention, just as the bride tries, with every ounce of her strength, to give her all to her beloved! What will she not do for her husband? My own mind can run in the same direction. What will I not do for my Spouse? Who is infinitely more than any earthly spouse. I will give Him all of the love and affection of my heart! Isn't that what the bride does, or should do, if she hasn't been doing this already? to sum up in a nutshell, what my vow of chastity is all about is for me to ever be a bride of Christ!

What it means to me to be a Passionist Nun in the light of my vow of poverty is that I am poor for the love of my Spouse, Jesus! I ask for all that I need on bended knees for the sake of Him Who died for me! Also, in the kneeling position, I ask permission to give items away to others because I love Him! I try to take out of the cell, that I live in, superfluous items, little by little, although this can be a slow installment process, that I don't need in order to make myself more free to rest in Him!

What it means to me to be a Passionist Nun in the light of my vow of obedience is that I obey my Mother Superior and all those in authority over me by submitting myself to them in everything! All that they want me to do for them is an indication of God's Will for me here and now! I need never worry while carrying out their directives! I will be like the Boy Jesus, twelve years of age, Who after having been lost, for three days in Jerusalem, would go down with Mary and Joseph to Nazareth and live under their Authority! To obey! That is enough!

What is means to me to be a Passionist Nun in the light of my fifth vow of enclosure is that I am enclosed in the garden of Jesus' Delight; and, far from the noise and bustle of the outside world, I can savor the sweetness of enjoying Jesus in the peace and quiet of an enclosed setting! This does not mean that I don't care about all those who live outside the cloister, Rather, I am here precisely because I DO care about them and love them deeply! In fact, I am here FOR them, so that I can have fewer distractions while loving them and praying for them!

After seeing what it means to me to be a Passionist Nun in light of my five vows that I made on my Profession Day, I can also say that It means that I be available to God and to His Church every moment of my life until that glorious moment when I shall return to the Father and see Him face to Face!
